When I first heard of Taiwan, I learned about how Taiwan has lots of fruit, lots of scooters, and also that it's an island in the middle of the ocean that's hot and humid. I arrived at the end of September, and the weather was still a lot hotter than my hometown in September, so I just figured that all of Taiwan must be humid and warm most of the year. I had no idea that there was a Central Mountain Range that actually gets snow every year. A new Taiwanese friend at the time invited my Japanese friend and me to go to Hehuan Mountain in November to watch a meteor shower, and I remember thinking that even though I didn't have winter clothes, it was okay because November would still be warm in Taiwan. Wow, was I wrong! The day of the trip up the mountain, my Japanese friend and I put on our t-shirts and sweatshirts, a pair of thin socks each with some light tennis shoes, and thin jeans. When our Taiwanese friend came to pick us up, he looked at us strangely and said we might be cold. So we both each grabbed a light jacket to wear and hopped in the car. That night up on 3,422 meter-tall Hehuan Mountain, our Taiwanese friend lay out on the grass wearing thick layers of clothes watching hundreds of shooting stars. My Japanese friend and I? We lay in the car all night under a blanket, holding each other close to keep warm, and learning an important lesson: Taiwan is hot most of the time, but when it's cold, it's really cold! So if you're going to go to the mountains in Taiwan, make sure to go prepared! But definitely do go, because the views are spectacular! (Remember to look at the bottom of the post for the song chords!)
